My 10th grade math teacher, who interestingly enough is named Lybroan James, used to employ a handy acronym when someone was overthinking, sending their brain in every direction except the easiest one — the one that was often right in front of them.
K.I.S.S. … Keep It Simple, Stupid.
While he’s probably had to retire that particular adage due to today’s more sensitive classroom environments, James’ words aptly apply to next week’s 2024 NBA Draft. While 7-footer Alexandre Sarr is still the betting favorite to go No. 1, the momentum for fellow Frenchman Zaccharie Risacher and, now, superstar UConn big man Donovan Clingan, has been swelling in recent weeks. Please let’s not allow prospect fatigue to force us into convincing ourselves that we need a change of direction.
With size, skill, versatility and varied international experience (he’s already played in Spain, the U.S. and Australia), Sarr is still the best prospect in the draft. We tend to see this every year as smokescreens are lobbed in every which way with the draft approaching, but Sarr’s name will likely be selected first overall next week, whether that’s by the Atlanta Hawks or someone else.
Therefore, despite the recent rumors of usurpation, Sarr remains No. 1 in my final mock draft before the big day. Other changes from my last mock draft include Serbian guard Nikola Topic sliding — though not as far as some might expect — after the news of his torn ACL, and former Providence guard Devin Carter moving into the top 10. And since we are all contractually obligated to mention him, Bronny James didn’t make it into my first round despite swirling scuttlebutt about Phoenix’s interest.
Because there are no “can’t-miss” guys on the board, this year’s draft should be one of the most intriguing in recent years. And while Victor Wembanyama may not be walking ducking through that door, history dictates that at least one of these guys — maybe the first pick, maybe the last — will end up being an NBA superstar.
