Florida football transfer portal 2024: News, announcements, players to watch, targets, needs, plus recruiting
Written by CBS SPORTS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED on December 17, 2024
The Florida Gators made strides down the stretch of the regular season, winning their final three games to secure an appearance against Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl. Their three losses since mid-September came against top-10 teams, so head coach Billy Napier was able to secure his job heading into next season. He will be tasked with replacing co-defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong, who left after two seasons to become the defensive coordinator at Houston. The Gators recorded 18 sacks during their final three games of the season, so they will try to carry that momentum into 2025.
Additionally, Florida will be scouring the college football transfer portal to find pieces to surround star quarterback DJ Lagway. He finished the regular season with 1,610 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, so the Gators have plenty of reasons to be optimistic this summer, especially if they can add talent from the portal and via Florida football recruiting. Florida football transfer portal news, preview
One clear area of emphasis for Napier during this transfer portal window will be solidifying his defensive line. The Gators are losing tackles Cam Jackson, Joey Slackman and Desmond Watson to graduation, so they will certainly need some additions at that position. Junior defensive lineman Caleb Banks had a strong finish to the season, making an early departure for the NFL a possibility, which would mean Napier could have to replace the entire defensive line rotation.
Defensive lineman Kelby Collins has already announced his intention to leave the program as a transfer, making the former four-star recruit one of the top prospects in the portal. Underclassmen Michai Boireau and D’Antre Robinson flashed promise, but Florida needs veterans from the portal to round out the position. One player the Gators are monitoring is Kentucky transfer Keeshawn Silver, who is a former five-star recruit.
Silver is looking at Florida, Miami (FL), Michigan and USC as some of his other top choices, and he will be visiting them within the next week. He already took a trip to Gainesville last week, and he has 46 career tackles and a sack. There are plenty of other options in the portal as well, so Napier will be busy finding replacements up front this month. Get all the latest 2024 Florida football transfer portal updates at Swamp247.
