World No. 1 Jannik Sinner earned his second consecutive Australian Open title with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory against No. 2 Alexander Zverev. The 23-year-old made history as the first Italian to win three Grand Slams

Sinner holds an 80-6 record since the start of 2024, which also includes the US Open trophy. Meanwhile, Zverev might be the most talented player to still not win a Grand Slam. This was his third major final, but the German star’s forehand struggles proved costly against Sinner.

Zverev advanced to the final after 10-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic retired because of an injury. Meanwhile, Sinner earned his ticket by beating American Ben Shelton in straight sets. Shelton’s exit meant American men are still facing a major drought, with Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open being their most recent Grand Slam trophy.

On the women’s side, there is an American champion once again. After having to face the two best players in the world — Iga Switaek and Aryna Sabalenka — Madison Keys has claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Keys outlasted Sabalenka in the final on Saturday over three sets to accomplish the feat.

Her only other appearance in a Grand Slam final came all the way back at the 2017 US Open where she lost in straight sets to fellow American Sloane Stephens. She’s the first American to win a Grand Slam title since Coco Gauff at the 2023 US Open. Keys also became the first player to defeat the top two players in the final two rounds of a Grand Slam since Venus Williams did it at Wimbledon in 2005. Sabalenka was going for her third consecutive Australian Open title in the losing effort.
