College basketball’s postseason began with a pair of ASUN Tournament games on Sunday night as the fight to claim automatic NCAA Tournament bids officially got underway. ASUN action will continue Monday with quarterfinal action as the top six seeds enter the fray.
No. 1 seed Lipscomb will face No. 10 seed Central Arkansas after it beat No. 9 seed Stetson 77-72 in a thriller on Sunday. In the other first-round game, No. 7 Austin Peay crushed No. 8 seed North Florida 90-69 and advanced to play No. 2 seed North Alabama in a quarterfinal matchup.
The other quarterfinals pit No. 4 seed Jacksonville against No. 5 seed Eastern Kentucky and No. 3 seed Florida Gulf Coast against No. 6 seed Queens. Each of the ASUN quarterfinal games are taking place inside the better-seeded team’s home venue. The semifinals will be Thursday, followed by the title game on Sunday.
More conference tournaments are on tap to begin Tuesday, when the Big South, Patriot League and Sun Belt start their conference tournaments. Each of them figure to be hotly contested tournaments as each conference will be a one-bid league for the NCAA Tournament.
As the week goes on, more conference tournaments will begin as the madness of March begins leading in to Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament on March 16. When conference tournament results roll in, we’ll be keeping track of them here as teams begin to claim automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
