This is the 10th season we’ve ranked Power Four (nee Power Five) college football coaches at CBS Sports, and it’s always interesting to follow the ebbs and flows of various reputations every year. The truth about our panel of voters is that while we cover the sport for a living and know more about “how the sausage is made” than we want to when it comes to opinions, we’re no different than any fan following the sport.
Do well, you’ll rise. Fall on your face, and you’ll fall here, too.
This year’s top 25 coaches list doesn’t have the dramatic shifts we saw in 2024, though. Last year featured the retirement of Nick Saban and the departure of Jim Harbaugh to the NFL. That led to a lot of movement, particularly in the top 10. This year, there’s still plenty of movement among the top 25, but 20 of the coaches ranked here were ranked last year, too.
That includes each of our top 14 coaches from 2024, though there’s been plenty of movement among the group. As is always the case, there is no set criteria for our panel on which to vote. The question, “who is the best coach?” is an open-ended one for a reason. The hope is through the compilation of so many different opinions, we find some signal in the noise.
I believe we do.
