Robin Gosens is set to join Inter Milan after the Serie A leaders finally reached an transfer agreement with Atalanta Bergamo on Wednesday after recently agreeing to personal terms with the club. He’ll join the Nerazzurri on an initial loan for the remainder of the season in a deal that comes with an obligation to buy this summer for €25 million (add-ons included). The 27-year-old, who has been sidelined since September with a thigh injury, is expected to undergo medicals on Thursday in Milan to complete his move.

The German left back is considered one of the top players in his position, and under Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini, he scored 29 goals with 21 assists in 157 matches. Those numbers easily make him one of most desirable best left backs in the market, especially after his impressive performance with the German national team in the Euros last summer.

Gosens, whose Atalanta contract was set to expire in June 2023, was also targeted by Newcastle but in the end he preferred to stay put in Italy. Atalanta landed him back in the summer of 2017 for around €400,000 and saw an exponential increase of his market value thanks to his performances for club and country. Ultimately, Atalanta president Antonio Percassi chose to part ways with his talented left back now rather than wait for the summer with the risk of losing more market value ahead of a possible free transfer move next year.

Gosens is viewed as a long-term investment and key cog in the Inter Milan squad as he works his way back from injury, which could take approximately five weeks. It’s also worth noting that Ivan Perisic’ contract is due to expire in a few months, and although negotiations over a new deal have started and will continue in the next weeks, the addition of Gosens might change the strategy of both the club and Perisic himself. Simone Inzaghi can now work with another important player, one of the best in Italian soccer as a left-wing in the 3-5-2 formation.

As soon as the international break ends, Inter will have a crunch fixture against AC Milan on Feb. 5 — you can stream the match on Paramount+.
