Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher gave a full-throated denial to rumors connecting him to the LSU job after the Tigers announced Ed Orgeron will not return in 2022 .
“I love being here,” Fisher told reporters on Monday. “This is the job I want.”
Fisher is widely viewed as a top potential candidate for the LSU job due to his deep ties in the program. The Aggies coach served as offensive coordinator for the Tigers from 2000 to 2006 under head coaches Nick Saban and Les Miles, winning a national championship with the former in 2003. Fisher and Saban recruited and developed many of the players that won the 2007 BCS title before leaving to become an assistant under Bobby Bowden at Florida State .
Notably, Fisher was given a 10-year, $75 million fully guaranteed contract at Texas A&M by then-athletic director Scott Woodward, who now holds the same title at LSU. Fisher recently signed an extension that will pay him nearly $95 million between 2022 and 2031. Neither contract requires a buyout should Fisher decide to leave for another opportunity.
“I really believe we’re in the process of building something great,” Fisher said. “I plan on being here and fulfilling this contract. My family has roots here, I’ve got ranches here, I hunt here, I love everything about this place.
“There’s nothing going on [with LSU]. There’s nothing happening there. I don’t want to be disrespectful to anybody else. I coached there, we won a national championship, it’s one of the best places in America, it’s a wonderful place. I love being at A&M and I plan on being at A&M here … I love it here.”
In four years at the helm, Fisher has led the Aggies to a 31-12 record and three bowl victories, including an Orange Bowl crown in 2020. With Orgeron leaving the head coaching ranks in 2022, Fisher will be one of four active FBS head coaches with a national championship, along with Saban, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and North Carolina’s Mack Brown.
