2021 MLB playoffs: White Sox vs. Astros odds, ALDS Game 2 picks, predictions from expert on 34-14 run

Written by on October 8, 2021

There are four games Friday, the most matchups possible on one day in the 2021 MLB playoffs, and the first is a quick turnaround for the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros as they play Game 2 of their American League Division Series in a matinee. It looks to be a stellar pitching matchup between 27-year-olds in Chicago right-hander Lucas Giolito and Houston southpaw Framber Valdez, as the White Sox look to even things up following a blowout Game 1 loss. First pitch Friday is 2:07 p.m. ET from Minute Maid Park in Houston. The series will then shift to the South Side of Chicago for Game 3 on Sunday. With Saturday off, every reliever on both sides should be available Friday.

Houston is listed as a -125 favorite (risk $125 to win $100) on the money line in the latest White Sox vs. Astros odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total runs scored is eight. Before making any Astros vs. White Sox picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine MLB expert Matt Severance has to say.

Severance, SportsLine’s breaking news writer, multi-sport handicapper and an Early Edge podcast regular, is 148-107 in his past 255 MLB picks, returning nearly $2,400. Severance is 34-14 on his last 48 picks involving White Sox games, returning approximately $1,700. He faded Chicago in Game 1, with the Sox losing 6-1. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Why you should back the White Sox

The best Chicago pitcher down the stretch in the regular season was Giolito. On Aug. 4 in a blowout loss to Kansas City, Giolito allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings to fall to 8-8 with a 3.98 ERA on the season. He has lost just once since then and finished 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 201 strikeouts in 178.2 innings. If Giolito has control, he’s as nasty as they come in the American League.

Over his final nine starts, Giolito was 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA over 49.2 innings with 56 strikeouts and a .192 opponents’ batting average. He didn’t allow more than three runs in any of those. Even before that hot stretch, Giolito threw a complete-game against Houston on July 17 in Chicago, allowing one run and three hits with eight Ks. Giolito’s lone previous postseason start was a masterpiece in Oakland last year, allowing one run and two hits over seven in a victory.

Why you should back the Astros

Valdez is one of the best left-handers in the American League, finishing 11-6 with a 3.14 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 125 strikeouts in 134.2 innings. He missed the first 49 games this season after breaking his left index finger in his first start of spring training. While the roof may be closed at Minute Maid Park on Friday, Valdez shined in day games with a 2.51 ERA in seven starts compared to a 3.44 ERA at night.

Valdez was 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in two starts this year vs. the White Sox. He struggled a bit in the matchup in Chicago but allowed two earned runs and just five hits over seven innings in a home victory on June 19. Valdez’s four career postseason appearances came last year and he was 3-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 24.0 innings. He allowed just 14 hits and struck out 26.
